NHTSA’s advice for toddlers is simple to state: keep them rear-facing as long as possible, until they hit the top height or weight limit of their seat. A convertible seat rated to 50 lb rear-facing gives you the most room to do that. The Graco Extend2Fit is the lightest of the three at 19 lb, the Chicco NextFit Max ClearTex has the most install aids, and the Nuna RAVA next is the premium flame-retardant-free pick.

The picks
★Lightest
GracoExtend2Fit Convertible Car Seat
Best for: Lightest seat with extra rear-facing legroom
A 19 lb convertible seat rated 4 to 50 lb rear-facing, with a 4-position extension panel that adds up to 5 in of legroom.
What we like
- Lightest of the three at 19 lb
- Extension panel for longer rear-facing use
- No-rethread harness adjusts with the headrest
Watch out for
- Widest listed width of the fixed-size seats here (19.5 in)
- Graco lists rear-facing height as a headroom rule, not a set number
At 19 lb, the Extend2Fit weighs 7.5 lb less than the other two, which matters if you move it between cars. Its 4-position extension panel adds up to 5 in of legroom, so a long-legged toddler can stay rear-facing longer. Graco rates it 4 to 50 lb rear-facing, as long as the child’s head stays at least 1 in below the handle, and 26.5 to 65 lb forward-facing up to 49 in. The harness and headrest adjust together, with no rethreading.
★Easiest install aids
ChiccoNextFit Max ClearTex
Best for: Install aids and flame-retardant-free fabric
A convertible seat rated 4 to 50 lb rear-facing up to 43 in, with a 9-position recline, dual bubble levels and ClearTex fabric free of added flame-retardant chemicals.
What we like
- Published rear-facing height limit (43 in)
- SuperCinch LATCH tightener and LockSure belt lock
- GREENGUARD Gold certified
Watch out for
- 26.5 lb, heavy to move between cars
- 31 in deep when fully reclined
Chicco built this seat around getting the install right: two bubble levels, a 9-position recline, a SuperCinch tightener for LATCH and a LockSure belt lock for seat-belt installs. It is one of two seats here with a published rear-facing height limit (43 in). The ClearTex fabric has no added flame-retardant chemicals and is GREENGUARD Gold certified. The trade-off is weight: 26.5 lb, and 31 in deep when fully reclined, so check your front-seat legroom.
★Premium FR-free
NunaRAVA next
Best for: Premium pick with an FR-free build
A convertible seat rated 5 to 50 lb rear-facing with the vehicle belt (5 to 35 lb with lower anchors), for children 18 to 49 in.
What we like
- Flame-retardant-free (per Nuna)
- Clear split between belt and lower-anchor limits
Watch out for
- Lower-anchor use stops at 35 lb rear-facing; switch to belt install after that
- Starts at 5 lb, not 4 lb
Nuna lists the RAVA next for children from 5 to 50 lb rear-facing with the vehicle belt and 18 to 49 in tall. Nuna sets separate limits for lower anchors: 35 lb rear-facing and 40 lb forward-facing. Past those, you reinstall with the seat belt. It weighs 26.5 lb, the same as the Chicco.
What to check before you buy
- Your car. NHTSA notes that not every seat fits every vehicle. Measure your back seat and, if you can, test-fit the seat before you buy.
- Rear-facing limits. Compare both weight and height. The tallest toddlers often outgrow a seat by height first.
- Lower-anchor limits. NHTSA gives a fallback formula when a seat has no label: 65 lb minus the weight of the car seat. Use the label when there is one.
- Expiry and registration. Seats expire. Register yours with the maker so you get recall notices.

Frequently asked questions
How long should my child ride rear-facing?
NHTSA says to keep your child rear-facing as long as possible, until they reach the top height or weight limit of their seat. All three seats here allow rear-facing use up to 50 lb with the vehicle belt.
Should I install with LATCH or the seat belt?
Either, but never both at once, per NHTSA. Lower anchors have weight limits. Nuna lists 35 lb for rear-facing lower-anchor use on the RAVA next, after which you switch to a belt install. Check the label on your seat.
Do convertible car seats expire?
Yes. Graco says to stop using the Extend2Fit and throw it away 10 years after its date of manufacture. Check the label or manual on any seat for its own date.
Will these fit three across?
Probably not in most cars. Graco lists 19.5 in, Chicco 19 in and Nuna 19 to 21 in. NHTSA advises testing a seat in your own vehicle before you buy.
